Fiji: Media Watch calls for 'positive' approach by youth

SUVA (The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): There is a need for young people to use the media wisely while at the same time critically analyse what comes out of it, says a Fiji Media Watch advocate.

Media monitoring co-ordinator Fulori Turaga said educating young people was part of their advocacy programme from 2010 to 2013.

This follows a presentation to students of Ahmadiyya Muslim College on Thursday.

"We've noticed schoolchildren and youths who are bombarded with what comes out of the media," she said.

"It is important to critically analyse what comes out of the media whether print, broadcast or even advertisements.

"We encourage them to use the media positively while at the same time critically analyse it."

Turaga said by monitoring the media, consumers became proactive and not passive about the media.

"Consumers adopt critical thinking," she said. "Consumers become selective and have an appreciative attitude of the media."

Turaga told the students they should become responsible media users.

She called on them to look out for sensational reporting and issues like violence, abusive language and images of women on radio, TV, or newspapers that degraded them or portrayed them as sexual objects without personality.
