UN: Anniversary of Kuwait's Liberation from Iraq

Deputy UN Chief To Attend Anniversary Celebration Of Kuwait’s Liberation From Iraq

New York, Feb 23 2011 6:10PM
Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro will travel tomorrow to Kuwait to represent United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon at ceremonies to mark the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait on Saturday.

Ms. Migiro will also hold meetings with senior Kuwaiti Government officials and meet with UN staff based in the Middle Eastern country. In addition, she will visit a project being implemented by the UN country team in Kuwait.

Iraq, under the leadership of the late Saddam Hussein, invaded Kuwait in 1990, an event that sparked what came to be known as the first Gulf War.

In January 1991 coalition forces launched a massive military campaign against Iraq after it failed to comply with UN Security Council resolutions which demanded the withdrawal of its troops from Kuwait. Iraqi forces began retreating from Kuwait on 26 February 1991.
