Embassy of Japan in Tonga holds one week of mourning

17 March 2011. The Prime Minister of Tonga, Lord Tu'ivakano has expressed his sincere condolences to the people of Japan, in light of the horrific destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku and Sendai areas last Friday 11th March.

"Oh behalf of the Government and the People of Tonga, I extend my most deep and sincere condolences and offer my humble prayers to the Government and the People of Japan," read a letter addressed to Prime Minister Kan Naoto on Monday 14th March, 2011.

"While we share collective sorrow, during these tragic and difficult times, we highly commend the speed with which the Government of Japan, under your able leadership, assisted its people with relief efforts.

We are therefore reassured of the recovery of Japan from this unfortunate natural disaster."

Prime Minister & Minister for Foreign Affairs, Information and Communications Lord Tu'ivakano was the first to sign a condolence book opened today by the Japanese Embassy in Tonga.

In memory of all the victims, the condolence book will be open from the 17th to 23rd March for the public to sign, from the hours of 10.00 am to 12.20 pm, and from 2.00 pm to 4.30 pm, except the weekend.

The Embassy will also fly the Japanese flag at half mast during this period.
