Statement by the High Representative Catherine Ashton on Libya
Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, made today the following statement:
“Over the last hours I have been following the situation in Libya with the utmost concern. Today I met in Paris with leaders from the international community to assess the situation and the urgent implementation of the resolution. I met with the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon and the Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa.
The UN Security Council resolution 1973 has sent a strong and unequivocal message to Colonel Khadafi: the violence against the people must stop immediately, the Libyan population must be protected.
Colonel Khadafi had and still has a choice to make. Either he abides immediately by the UNSC resolution or the international community will have no choice but to continue to act. I hope he will listen to the demands of the Libyan people, the European Union, the Arab League, the African Union and fulfil all the conditions set out by the international community in the UNSC resolution.”
