Welfare of Solomons students abroad a prime concern

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, April 26, 2011) - Solomon Islands will open two new foreign missions next month, one in Cuba and another in Geneva, Switzerland.

The national broadcaster, Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reported that Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Shanel told parliament the Geneva Embassy will co-ordinate Solomon Islands interests with United Nations agencies and other international organizations based there.

On the Cuban Embassy, Minister Shanel said one of its main tasks will be to look after the welfare of the Solomon Islands students studying there.

Meanwhile, Fiji has allocated one-point-seven hectares of land in the capital, Suva for the new Solomon Islands new diplomatic mission in a bid to strengthen bilateral ties between the two Melanesian countries.

Minister Shanel says Fiji announced the allocation during the recent Melanesian Spearhead Group Meeting in Suva, Fiji.
