Testimony: DEA agents posing as pilots flew cocaine shipment through Dallas airport --US agents helped launder millions in drug proceeds 09 Jan 2012 Mexico's government allowed a group of undercover U.S. anti-drug agents and their Colombian informant to launder millions in cash for a powerful Mexican drug trafficker and his Colombian cocaine supplier, according to documents made public Monday. The Mexican magazine Emeequis published portions of documents that describe how Drug Enforcement Administration agents, a Colombian trafficker-turned-informant and Mexican federal police officers in 2007 infiltrated the Beltran Leyva drug cartel and a cell of money launderers for Colombia's Valle del Norte cartel in Mexico... In his testimony, the DEA agent in charge of the operation says DEA agents posing as pilots flew at least one shipment of cocaine from Ecuador to Madrid through a Dallas airport.

US marine in dock for murdering Iraqis 10 Jan 2012 A US marine has appeared in a court martial in California for an investigation into his role in the killing of two dozen Iraqi civilians in 2005. The trial of US Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich is the last in a series of hearings involving eight US marines charged with the killing of 24 civilians, including unarmed women and children, in November 2005 in the Iraqi town of Haditha. "The evidence will show that none of the victims were a threat," military prosecutor Maj. Nicholas Gannon said in his opening statement at the hearing on Monday.

US ships 'in second rescue of Iranians in Gulf' 10 Jan 2012 A US ship has picked up Iranians in trouble at sea, in the second such rescue in less than a week, the Pentagon has said. US Coast Guard cutter Monomoy rescued six Iranian mariners after their vessel broke down in the Gulf. One of the six had suffered burns and is receiving treatment, Pentagon spokesman George Little told reporters. The US Navy rescued 13 Iranian fishermen last Thursday after they were captured by Somali pirates.

Fukushima nuclear cleanup could create its own environmental disaster 09 Jan 2012 Beginning this month, at least 1,000 sq km of land [in the Fukushima region] — much of it forest and farms - will be cleaned as workers power-spray buildings, scrape soil off fields, and remove fallen leaves and undergrowth from woods near houses. ...The radioactive particles the Japanese are trying to get rid of can be quite "sticky". Removing them without removing large amounts of soil, leaves, and living plants is nearly impossible. The Ministry of Environment estimates that Fukushima will have to dispose of 15 to 31m cubic metres of contaminated soil and debris by the time the decontamination projects end.
