World: Asia's Unknown Uprisings By George Katsiaficas

People power in the Philippines, Burma, Tibet, China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia, 1947-2009

Asia's Unknown Uprisings by George Katsiaficas covering uprisings from the Philippines, Burma, Tibet, China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Indonesia from 1947 to 2009 is a great contribution to a much needed literature on some of the events where the people have intervened to shape their own destinies and the destinies of their nations. If the peoples' will to participate in the political life of their nations need proof this book of 578 pages provides this amply.

The first volume of this series was on South Korean social movements in the 20th Century. With these two books George Katsiaficas has contributed to creating a new genre in writing which attempts to reflect on uprisings as an important aspect of understanding the actual lives of these countries manifesting the dynamism of the people themselves who under certain circumstances intervene to shape the histories of their countries. Both books are likely to contribute towards a discussion in understanding these great moments.

Katsiaficas writes

This book has its origins in a suggestion made over dinner in Gwanju, South Korea, in May 2000. That evening, as I sat across the table from East Timor's Bishop Carlos Belo, he looked at me, peering deeply into my eyes. With a modesty that underlies his great intelligence, Bishop Belo very politely asked, "Professor, you've written books about European and American social movements. Why don't you write about Asia?" With his simple question, the next decade of my life took an unexpected turn.

James Petras, author of the Arab Revolt and the Imperialist Counterattack writes:

George Katiaficas is America's leading practitioner of the method of 'participant-observation', acting with and observing the movements that he is studying. This study of People power is a brilliant narrative of the present as history from below. It is a detailed account of the struggle for freedom and social justice, encompassing the different currents, both reformist and revolutionary, in a balanced study that combines objectivity and commitment. Above all, he presents the beauty of popular movements in the process of self-emancipation.

The book is now available at bookshops.
