International Day of UN Peacekeepers

International Day of UN Peacekeepers

Press Statement

John Kerry
Secretary of State

Washington, DC

May 29, 2013

For 65 years, uniformed personnel from nations around the world have come together to serve in UN peacekeeping missions, often in the most difficult and challenging environments.

These operations have helped bring stability to conflict zones, given protection to civilian populations, and paved the way for transitions to peace and prosperity.

Each year on this day, we pause to recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of UN peacekeepers and the missions they support, including the 112 who lost their lives this year.

Today, more than 100,000 UN peacekeepers serve in 15 missions in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and the Middle East. Supported by the international community, their efforts advance global peace and security, including the security of the United States.

The United States is unwavering in its commitment to these important missions.
