Eastern Highway is back on Council agenda

Media Release 9 March 2000

Business pleased Eastern Highway is back on Council agenda

“The Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern) welcomes the Auckland City Council’s decision to put the Eastern Highway back on its agenda,” says EMA Chief Executive, Alasdair Thompson.

“In our submission to the Council’s draft strategic plan, we asked that they promote plans, consents and Transfund funding for an Eastern Highway by 2005.

“EMA is pleased the route is now back on the Council’s strategic plan as a milestone for 2005.

“This will open the opportunity for appropriate bodies like Transit New Zealand and Transfund to plan for this highway, begin investigatory work, do a benefit to cost analysis and assess the highway’s funding priority.

“However, we are concerned that the Council’s draft strategic plan makes no acknowledgement of the need to complete Auckland’s basic roading systems, without which Auckland cannot have “one of the world’s finest transport systems” as envisioned in their plan.
