New Community Centre – A Culmination of Years Work

Last Saturday marked a final farewell to twenty-five years of ‘temporary’ accommodation, when Grey Lynn’s new $1.1 million Community Centre officially opened its doors.

A large crowd was present to witness the opening ceremony, including Minister for Local Government, Sandra Lee, Auckland City Councillors and Community Board members.

Councillor Penny Sefuiva, Chairperson of Council’s Community Development Committee, says that the new facility is testimony to the enthusiasm and commitment of many local people.

“The opening of the centre follows on from years of lobbying by community groups and local families. The tired old prefab block served its purpose well, but it was never really adequate. The new centre finally realises the goal of a multi-purpose facility, which can be adapted to meet the needs of the many people that use it”

Councillor Sefuiva said that whilst the Grey Lynn community had changed in character over the years, the need for the new centre had not.

“The centre has been designed to adapt to changing demands, and as it is managed by the local community, it should continue to meet their needs. It’s a great example of Council working in partnership with local people, and I hope it’s something we can emulate elsewhere in the city.”

The Grey Lynn centre is the first of three new facilities to be opened in the Western Bays area. Last year, fires at the Freeman’s Bay and Ponsonby Community Facilities caused extensive damage, and both buildings require extensive re-development.

Councillor Sefuiva says that the opening of the Grey Lynn centre signals a greater emphasis on meeting the needs of people and communities – a fact which has been given high priority in Council’s Draft Strategic Plan.
