Mayor's plan to cut and align committees backed

Media Release June 21st, 2000

Mayor's plan to cut and align committees backed for Auckland

Mayor Chris Fletcher's plan to halve the number of Auckland Council's standing committees and align the new set with the Council's Strategic Plan has won the approval of the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).

"This is a logical move by the mayor that is long overdue. It has our full support," said the association's chief executive, Alasdair Thompson.

"In the longer run, the re-alignment should achieve significant administration cost savings, but that is not the main reason we support the change.

"We are backing it because the new committee structure will tie into the seven strategic areas that the Council has identified. The new structure will greatly assist with focussing councillors' minds on these priority areas.

"So the new structure will streamline Council's decision making processes, so we congratulate Mayor Fletcher on the initiative."
