Metrowater Project To Halve Orakei Overflows
Metrowater will halve the number of wastewater overflows into Orakei Basin over the next three years.
Auckland city's water and wastewater utility company has launched a $6 million project to reduce the risk of overflows at eight discharge points near the Basin. Together these points contribute 70% of the overflows in Orakei, Remuera, St Johns and Meadowbank.
Metrowater Environmental Manager Mercedes Lentz says the project has two parts; the construction of a new public drain and the physical separation of stormwater and wastewater pipes on all private properties with combined systems. The separation will prevent wastewater from these properties overflowing into the stormwater system and into Orakei Basin during heavy rain. Ms Lentz says the work is a significant step forward in addressing the Basin's environmental issues.
"We have been progressively separating the stormwater and wastewater pipes in Orakei, Remuera, St Jones and Meadowbank since 1996," she says.
"This project will complete that work, making several overflow points redundant and significantly reducing the risk of wastewater entering the Orakei Basin. Although this won't solve all of the Basin's problems, it is a positive step forward."
Ms Lentz says residents in Orakei, Remuera, St Johns and Meadowbank should have received a brochure about the project in their mailboxes by now. The brochure details the separation programme, which is split into seven stages over three years. It also explains the consultation process for residents directly affected by the work.
Ms Lentz says Project Orakei has been launched under Metrowater's Pipi Project banner, symbolising work that will positively impact the environment. It is one of several major environmental projects the company is undertaking this year.
