The fourth Race Unity Day, a celebration of multicultural diversity in Hutt City, will be held on Saturday 16 March from 11am to 3pm on the lawn outside the Dowse Art Museum.

The day will feature performances from over fifteen different cultural groups and, with a melting pot of food and craft stalls, people will find it difficult to settle on just one flavour.

"This a great event designed to bring together people of all ethnicities and encourages them to celebrate and experience different cultures in a fun and carnival atmosphere," said Tanya Winter, Manager Community Development.

Dr Rajen Prasad, a past Race Relations Conciliator, initiated Race Unity Day in 1999. Its focus was on celebrating the different cultures that make up Aotearoa/New Zealand. With over 1000 refugees from 26 different countries settled in Hutt City since 1994, the city boasts a very diverse population indeed.

Performances at Race Unity Day this year include a Polish dancing group, African drumming, Titan Brass Band, Chinese opera, Yoga meditation, Dutch modern singing, Sri Lankan dancing, and a Kendo display.

Stall sites are still available and anyone wanting to take part in the day is encouraged to call Tanya Winter, Community Development, Hutt City Council on 570-6524 to book a space. Stall sites cost $20.

Last year the event attracted more than 2000 people.
