Deal Conclusion a Positive Step For Auckland Rail

The government’s conclusion of the deal to return the Auckland region’s rail corridors to public ownership has been welcomed by the Auckland Regional Council.

The ARC, which is responsible for provision of rail services and the procurement of trains, says completion of the deal assists further progress towards a rapid rail system where modern trains leave every 10 minutes during peak times from modern stations.

ARC Chair Gwen Bull says that in recent weeks the council has established an open tender process to acquire new trains and agreed the process for the appointment of the new network operator.

“Today’s announcement confirming public access to the rail corridors ensures that the ARC can continue its progress towards a better train service for Auckland,” she says.

Auckland Regional Transport Network Limited (ARTNL), the company owned by local councils and tasked with improving the infrastructure on corridors and tracks, also acknowledged the passing of this milestone.

ARTNL Chair Ross Keenan says today’s announcement is another step towards an improved rail service.
