Mayor John Banks Shutting Down Democracy

23 May 2002

No deputations have been allowed by Mayor John Banks for tonight's Council meeting. Despite going through the accepted procedures, an application to speak on the special consultation process as required in the Local Government Bill and the implications for housing, on behalf of the Council Housing Action Group, was refused.

Another member of the public, Dr Joan Chapple, also had her application declined. This was to hear her concern about the change in direction and behaviour of the Mayor and the new Council. Penny Bright of the Water Pressure Group was refused on the issue of the Waikato pipeline and Auckland City's drinking water.

"This is another example of John Banks shutting down local democratic processes. He is alienating people rather than creating a lively, open and democratic culture." says Sigrid Shayer, spokesperson for the Council Housing Action Group.

A rally has been called by Wake Up Auckland for 5.30pm outside the Town Hall before the Council meeting at 6pm.

For further information contact Sigrid Shayer, 3611517. Dr Joan Chapple is willing to speak to the media about her deputation which she subsequently sent through as a letter to Councillors: ph 575 8953
