ARC Goes International for New Train Operator

ARC Goes International for New Train Operator

31 May 2002

A modern, frequent rail system for Aucklanders is one step closer with the Auckland Regional Council this week calling for world-wide tenders for a future rail operator.

The ARC is seeking international interest for the provision of passenger services, due to commence when existing operator Tranz Metro’s service contract expires mid-2003.

“A world-class rapid transit system with a 10 minute peak frequency for rail is what Aucklanders can expect to see by 2006,” says ARC Passenger Transport Chairwoman, Catherine Harland. “An international tender process signals our intention to bring the best in rail operations to Auckland.”

The ARC has adopted this open process to attract potential operators with innovative solutions, and anticipates a wide range of ideas on how to deliver a high quality, reliable rail service for Aucklanders. The new operator will be selected towards the end of the year.

The ARC has called for expressions of interest to acquire replacement rolling stock.

“Both processes ensure an opportunity to secure the best value trains and the best operator for the region,” said Cr. Harland.

Cr. Harland emphasised that the commencement of the tenders is only the first step in a long-term vision for a quality, modern train system for Aucklanders.

“We’re investing a significant amount into rapid transit,” continued Cr. Harland. “"Not just in financial terms, but in raising expectations that through a network of integrated solutions - buses, rail, ferries and roads - people in our region will be free to move around.

“Efficient and reliable rail services will provide the backbone to the public transport system Aucklanders demand.”
