EQC Involvement Important First Step For Waihi
Advice that the Earthquake Commission has been instructed by Government to assess 14 properties at threat from old mine workings in Waihi has been welcomed as an important first step by Hauraki District Mayor Basil Morrison.
EQC is sending an assessor to Waihi to look at either relocating the affected houses or compensating the owners of properties in the high and medium risk zones identified in a technical report a month ago.
“It’s concrete evidence that Government intends being part of the community solution to the problems facing Waihi,” Mr Morrison says.
“However, this is only part of the package being worked on by Council, the Government, Waihi Gold and all affected property owners in the town.
“Ongoing discussions are taking place between the parties to ensure that all property owners are treated fairly and equitably.”
