Drivers using SH2/29, east of Tauranga, can look forward to a safer journey with Transfund New Zealand approving $3.5 million for safety improvements.
Transfund's Operations Manager, Bob Alkema said the improvements include separating the four-lane highway by a central concrete median barrier, widening the lanes and installing street lighting.
"This section of highway, between Te Maunga and Maungatapu, has a high number of crashes, some of which result in serious injury. This work is aimed at reducing this crash rate," he said.
The funding is in response to a funding application from Transit New Zealand and is part of Transfund's 2002/03 National Land Transport Programme.
Transit Hamilton Manager Colin Knaggs says he is delighted with the news.
"We can now get on and let the contract with a view to work beginning in January year after the holiday traffic has gone. It will take about 18 months as some pre-loading of the soil is required," he said.
