The State of our Environment

Greater Wellington is the promotional name of the Wellington Regional Council

News Release

27 January, 2003

The State of our Environment

What is the current state of the environment in the greater Wellington Region? Can we swim in our sea and rivers? How clean is our air?

Greater Wellington - The Regional Council’s recently released annual summary on the state of the environment has the answers to these questions.

The information has been issued as a series of “report cards’ that summarise Greater Wellington’s environmental monitoring results for 2001/2002.

“Greater Wellington works hard to manage the Region’s water, land, air and coast, and to reduce pollution. We want to ensure a sustainable future for all life in our Region - our success can be measured by looking at the results of our monitoring programmes,” says Greater Wellington Environment Committee chairman Ian Buchanan.

The report cards also tell you how Greater Wellington is managing these resources and give tips about what you can do to help the environment.

The cards cover:

- river and stream quality;

- pollution complaints;

- water quantity;

- air quality;

- biodiversity;

- coastal water quality;

- groundwater; and

- soil health.

They are available from the Greater Wellington offices, or phone 384 5708.
