The first ever Regional Parks Network Management Plan sets out a common vision for the five regional parks managed by Greater Wellington – The Regional Council.
During the development of the draft plan Greater Wellington received over 400 submissions, conducted a phone survey of 700 residents of the region, held meetings with people who had various interests in the parks and met with Iwi. Parks and Forests staff developed the draft plan, which has been approved by the Greater Wellington Regional Council and is now available for public comment.
“The regional parks we manage have to meet a diversity of needs but have many features in common. This plan will allow us to manage them in a comprehensive and consistent way,” says Landcare committee chairman Chris Laidlaw. Cr. Laidlaw says the community’s input is very important – “We need to know if we are heading in the right direction. This plan sets the foundation for the park specific plans.”
“The draft network plan provides a guideline for how we propose to manage the parks for the community and for the environmental and heritage values they contain. The detail of what can be done in each park will come in the park specific plans which we will begin in the second half of the year,” Cr. Laidlaw says.
