Improvements to Taharoto Road

Improvements to Taharoto Road will ease morning bottleneck

City-bound motorists and bus passengers who travel down Taharoto Rd to access the northern motorway on-ramp on Northcote Rd will soon have a quicker journey into town.

North Shore City Council begins work in April on widening a 70-metre section of Taharoto Rd, just north of Shea Tce, to allow for an extra south-bound lane. In addition, a short section of new bus lane will improve travel times for passengers.

Joel Cayford, chairperson of North Shore City's works and environment committee, says the work is designed to improve traffic flow for motorists seeking access to the two right-hand turning lanes into Northcote Rd.

"For many years Taharoto Rd has been a frustrating stretch of road for morning motorists heading into the city. Traffic has faced real difficulty accessing the two right-turn lanes, while those remaining within North Shore City travelling to Takapuna and beyond have also had to slow down to a crawl to pass through this morning-peak bottleneck," Councillor Cayford says.

"This is a fairly straightforward project, but the benefits are significant.

"Building bus priority measures on city arterials where they connect to the motorway is a top priority for our council."

The work is expected to be completed by June.
