Physical work in sight for Glenfield Rd widening

North Shore City Council has approved in principle plans for the first two stages of the Glenfield Rd widening project.

The council's works and environment committee this week endorsed the roading design plans for the widening of Glenfield Rd from Bentley Ave to Camrose Place ($3.4m), and at the Sunset Rd intersection ($1.4m).

Work will begin at the Sunset/Glenfield Rds intersection in April/May, and tenders will be sought for the Bentley Ave to Camrose Place widening once landscaping details have been finalised.

Committee chairperson, Joel Cayford, says the widening of Glenfield Rd will generally allow for two traffic lanes and a cycle lane in each direction, separated by a flush median. An additional south-bound bus lane together with a turning lane for general traffic will be incorporated into Glenfield Rd's intersections with Bentley Ave, Hogans and Sunset Rds.

"This project must not look like Taharoto Rd. Glenfield Rd is in a residential area. Landscaping needs to give it an 'Avenue' feel," Councillor Cayford says.

North Shore City Council is investing a total of $11m on Glenfield Rd over the next five years to improve traffic flow, road safety, and passenger transport services.

The works and environment committee this week called for the shared bus and cycle lanes to be wider than originally proposed.

Joel Cayford says options for a peak hour transit lane will be investigated further, and more traffic modelling work undertaken to reflect this.

"Glenfield bus priorities need to be integrated with those on Onewa Rd," he says.
