New Playgrounds Feature Non-Cca Timber

Two playgrounds using Ecowood rather than CCA-treated timber, will be officially opened in Hutt City on Monday 14 April.

At 10.00am the playground at Naenae Park, Seddon Street will be officially opened and at 2pm the new playground at Antrim Crescent, Wainuiomata will be opened.

"These playgrounds are both made of Ecowood, which is a 'friendlier' wood treatment than CCA. It is tanalised, but is a more natural alternative to the tanalised wood used elsewhere," said Lesley Gerrard, Hutt City ContractsManager.

During consultation on the types of playground residents favoured, they were also asked whether CCA-treated timber was a concern. Seventeen per cent of respondents replied that it was. Residents in each neighbourhood could choose between three to four playground designs. One of the four designs used Ecowood products.

"Council was aware of some residents' concerns brought about by recent publicity regarding CCA-treated timber.

"It was in this climate of heightened awareness that the playground equipment manufacturer and wood manufacturer approached Council with a special offer to use their products rather than those using CCA treated timber.

"In short, the offer was a great deal and meant that residents were able to choose play equipment that represented excellent value for money, and added $4000 in value to each playground," said Lesley Gerrard.
