Transfund approves Transit's 25% contribution

Transfund approves Transit's 25% contribution to determining Eastern Corridor preferred option

Transfund New Zealand has approved a request by Transit New Zealand to fund 25 percent of the work required to establish the preferred option for Auckland's proposed Eastern Transport Corridor.

In October last year, Transit, together with Auckland and Manukau city councils, agreed to work together to protect and develop the corridor as a major transport route for road vehicles, passenger transport, cyclists and pedestrians.

Transit requested funding for a 25 percent share of cost of the work. The funding amount is yet to be confirmed as it is dependent on Auckland City Council, the lead agency promoting the project, confirming the scope and cost of work required to establish a preferred option.

Transfund has subsequently received further information from Auckland City Council, which will be considered by the Board at its May meeting.

Chairperson David Stubbs says the Board agreed to fund Transit's contribution as the project has the potential to reduce congestion on SH1 and there was an advantage in having experienced Transit staff involved in the project.

Earlier this year, the Transfund Board approved the funding of Auckland City Council's share of the cost to identify the form and structure of the preferred option at a financial assistance rate of 48 percent.
