Pippa Blake’s Statement on Sir Peter's Tribute
“It was one of Peter’s wishes that NZL 32, the black boat that won the America’s Cup for New Zealand, should be exhibited at Te Papa as part of the national collections.
“Today’s announcement of funding by the New Zealand Government and Auckland City Council means that, by 2005, NZL 32 will be exhibited on Auckland’s waterfront to the public of New Zealand and to people from all over the world.
“It also means that proposals for an exhibition hall commemorating all aspects and facets of Peter’s life, including his yachting and environmental endeavours, will be realised. I think the proposed exhibition, Blue Water Black Magic, is a fitting tribute to Peter’s life and works. I hope people will be inspired.
“I would like to thank the New Zealand Government and the Auckland City Council for their financial support of the project at the National Maritime Museum.
“I
also applaud the initiative of Te Papa and the National
Maritime Museum. I am delighted that a concept was created
to incorporate the display of NZL 32 into a tribute to Peter
on the Auckland
waterfront.”
