Director Transport appointment announced by ARC

Auckland Regional Council Chief Executive Jo Brosnahan announced today that Peter Winder, currently the Chief Executive of Local Government New Zealand, has accepted an appointment as Director of Transport with the ARC.

In making the announcement, Ms Brosnahan said, “we are absolutely delighted that Peter has decided to join us. He has most recently displayed his leadership ability as Chief Executive of Local Government New Zealand, where his strategic focus supported by excellent relationship management and advocacy qualities, underpinned with extensive Local Government knowledge, have contributed to his success. He has also gained valuable experience working at General Manager level with Tourism New Zealand. He will bring to our organisation an excellent combination of local knowledge and proven leadership experience. He is from Auckland and spent 10 years earlier in his career with the ARC in transport planning and resource management. We look forward to his arrival in August and will have plenty of challenges ready for him.”

Peter Winder is married with three children, has a MA with first class honours in Geography and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics.

From 2001 to the present, he has been the Chief Executive of Local Government New Zealand, based in Wellington. His role included advocacy for all Local Authorities with Central Government and promotion of best practice for all councils. He played a major role in the development and implementation of the latest local government reform package including the Local Government Act (2002)

From 1995 to 2001, he was General Manager Industry Development with Tourism New Zealand. He had responsibility for strategic and business planning, managing the relationship with Government, market research, policy work and was the Chai of two Tourism New Zealand subsidiaries Qualmark(NZ) Ltd and the Visitor Information Network.

From 1985 to 1995 he worked with the Auckland Regional Council in transport planning and resource management. Through 1994 and 1995 he lead the Regional Development Team and was involved in the early work that lead to the Regional Growth Forum.
