New Botanic Gardens visitor centre design

First glimpse of new Botanic Gardens visitor centre design

The first concept drawings for the new visitor centre at Auckland Regional Botanic Gardens in Manurewa have been released.

The Auckland Regional Council is wants local Manurewa residents, Botanic Gardens visitors and other stakekholder groups to take the opportunity to have their say on the preliminary design this month.

Botanic Gardens Curator Manager Jack Hobbs is encouraging local residents and gardens visitors to take the opportunity to meet the design team, have a look at the concept drawings of the preliminary design and discuss them with the project team.

“Two key consultation opportunities are an Open Day on Sunday June 22 and a public meeting on Tuesday 24 June,” Mr Hobbs says.

“Members of the design team will be at both events and it will be a great chance for them to hear from the public and respond to any questions about the development.”

The Auckland Regional Council is developing the new visitor centre because the existing facilities, built when the gardens opened in 1982, no longer meet visitor demand or expectations.

Mr Hobbs says the new visitor centre will include improved information services, themed plant displays, a café, more toilet facilities, office space and improved retail space.

The design team includes architects John Austin and Max Grant of Nordon Projects, landscape designer Catherine Hamilton and well-known artist Kate Wells.

Mr Hobbs describes the concept design as very contemporary but in keeping with the Gardens’ surroundings through its use of appropriate materials.

He says the centre will not only be a great attraction for the Botanic Gardens but also an asset to the local community.

“I hope local residents will realise this and take the opportunity to come along to the meeting or the Open Day, “ he says.

The concept designs will also be on display in the existing visitor centre between now and the end of June, so anyone calling in to the gardens over that time can see them and complete a feedback form to have their say.
