New trustees sought for Stadium

The group which runs the North Harbour Stadium is looking for some fresh faces to join its ranks.

Under its trust deed, the North Shore Domain and North Harbour Stadium Trust Board reviews its membership on an annual basis and the existing trustees are now inviting expressions of interest from fellow community-minded and business-focused people keen to become involved.

Trust chairman and local businessman, Peter Fitzsimmons, says being a trustee is a great opportunity to contribute to the ongoing success of the multi-purpose facility located in the heart of Albany.

"The North Harbour Stadium is proving itself to be one of New Zealand's leading entertainment and sporting venues," Mr Fitzsimmons says. "The trust is a group of North Shore residents passionate about their community and providing a top class facility for everyone to enjoy," he says.

Since it opened in March 1997, the stadium has played host to everything from landscape opera to All Blacks tests, with more than one million people coming through the gates over the past six years. Its versatility was put to the test over summer as first class cricket, first grade rugby league, Super 12 rugby and two rock concerts came to town. An estimated 60,000 people came to watch.

The trust is made up of seven people: Chris Aiken, Dianne Hale, Paul Harper, David Hayde, Chris Kennings, Kevin Mulcahy and Mr Fitzsimmons. Messrs Kennings and Hayde and Mrs Hale are founding trustees. Dianne Hale is North Shore City's deputy mayor and a councillor since 1992.

In early 1990, a handful of visionary people assembled to discuss the concept of a multi-purpose sports, recreation, cultural and entertainment facility for the North Harbour region. North Harbour Stadium is the centrepiece of the North Shore Domain, a 24-hectare site consisting of multi-purpose sports fields, landscaped walking paths, picnic areas and gardens.
