Two shortlisted for Britomart above-ground redevelopment

The Auckland City Council has short-listed two parties as final contenders for the above-ground redevelopment of the Britomart heritage precinct.

At today’s official Britomart opening Mayor Hon John Banks announced Bluewater Consortium and Melview Developments as the contenders.

“Today’s news is a significant step forward. This is the largest heritage and urban renewal project ever undertaken by a local authority in New Zealand,” said Mr Banks.

The 5.2-hectare precinct will incorporate a rich mix of activities and create an environment that will be vibrant, people dominated and a safe twenty-four hour space.

“We are on the eve of a total refurbishment of the surrounding 19 historic warehouse buildings, conserving our heritage and providing a huge boost to the central business district.”

Four candidates were selected in February and asked to supply Council with detailed plans for the restoration of the precinct. The final two parties were shortlisted from there.

Council is working with Bluewater Consortium and Melview Developments to produce final proposals by 29 August 2003 for further evaluation.

“Both proposals present exciting plans for a new low-rise heritage precinct, which alongside the new transport centre, will return downtown Auckland to its former glory,” said Mr Banks.
