Draft reserve management plan for Lake Pupuke

Draft reserve management plan for Lake Pupuke

North Shore City Council is working closely with its local community on the management of Lake Pupuke, Takapuna's unique freshwater lake and the area's original water supply.

The lake is a popular venue for a wide range of water- and land-based recreational activities, and balancing these activities can be a challenge.

North Shore City's community services and parks committee chairperson, Margaret Miles, says the council recently received 121 submissions regarding the future management of the lake.

"Many of those providing their views wanted the walkway extended round the lake, which is difficult because about half of the lake shore is privately owned, and others were concerned that increased commercial use and events around the lake might bring more noise, traffic and pollution," Councillor Miles says.

"Input on the plan was also sought from local iwi, who suggested that more emphasis be placed on the significance of historical use of the lake, and recognition be given for sportsmen and women who trained there and later made their mark at world class events."

A revised plan will be developed from the latest round of submissions, it will be considered by the Takapuna Community Board, and will again be reviewed through the public submissions process. It will be put into effect later next year.
