MEDIA RELEASE Thursday, 14 August 2003
Statement from David Thornton.
ARC COUNCILLORS SHOULD RESIGN NOW
EVIDENCE FOR LEGAL ACTION BEING COLLECTED
After refusing the opportunity yesterday to move voluntarily to reset the rates the 'stubborn seven' who voted against such a move must now resign.
The Rebellion has a new catch phrase
"The time has come for them to pay - why should we continue to pay them. Resign NOW"
The Rebellion is now moving on to collect evidence for legal action and prepare a case for Ministerial intervention.
Legal action could stem from any instance of the ARC seeking to put penalties onto anyone's unpaid rates.
This follows the confused advice given by ARC lawyers at yesterday's meeting.
Irregularities concerning rate setting are now emerging - a cause for legal action to replace the rates under section 120 of the Rating Act.
Public Meeting tonight organised by Howick Ratepayers at Owairoa School, Nelson Street, Howick at 7.pm - speakers will be Rebellion "Leaders" and ARC councillor Craig Little - a local member.
Advance Notice Gwen Bull and David Thornton will both be speaking at the Northcote Residents Association's AGM on August 28th.
