Community Garden celebrates second birthday

A community gardening and picnic day will be held this Sunday (August 31st) to celebrate the second anniversary of the Tonks Community Garden.

Two years ago on the first day of spring around forty people got together and throughout one beautiful sunny day created the Tonks Community garden. We planted heirloom fruit trees, organic vegetables, herbs and berries and surrounded the entire garden with native trees and other plants.

This garden was created in one of New Zealand's oldest original streets. A street which lies in the path of the proposed Wellington `bypass'. The garden is a living symbol of the dedication of the anti-'bypass' and upper Te Aro communities of Wellington to create a thriving, beautiful community space despite Transit's deliberate neglect of its properties in the area, and its plans to destroy the area's character.

Join us for some gardening, picnicking, sunbathing and general fun. Bring some kai and drink and invite your friends, family and neighbours too.

Meet 10am onwards in Tonks Avenue (off upper Cuba Street opposite Thistle Hall), Sunday, August 31st (September 1st falls on a Monday this year, so we're a day early).
