Mayor On Payout Decision

Mayor On Payout Decision

Hutt City Mayor, John Terris, is pleased that trustees of the Hutt Mana Energy Trust have taken heed of Hutt City Council's submission that a community trust be established for the benefit of the community.

"I still think it is a bit disappointing that the funds are to be split 75-25 in favour of individuals," said Mayor Terris.

"I believe trustees had an opportunity to do something far-reaching and visionary for the communities in the district of the Hutt Mana Energy Trust.

"A 50-50 split, as was urged by my Council, would have given individuals a sizeable amount of money, whilst ensuring a decent amount of income could be made available each year for community projects that would benefit this, and future, generations.

"We seem to live in a society where the interests of the individual always seem to be put before the community interest," said Mayor Terris.

"Having said that, it is good that this saga can now be put behind us and people can now plan how they will use their windfall."
