HUTT CITY COMMUNITY AWARDS

Nominations called for Hutt City Community Awards - closing 17/10/2003.

The awards, which are run by TrustPower in association with the Hutt City Council, are intended to recognise the efforts and achievements of voluntary organisations, according to TrustPower's Community Relations Manager, Graeme Purches.

"They are not grants, although winners and runners up do receive cash prizes as well as certificates. The real purpose is to recognise and increase awareness of the good work carried out by voluntary groups, whose members are often the unsung heroes of communities all around New Zealand."

The awards cover five categories Heritage & Environment, Health & Well Being, Art & Culture, Sport & Recreation, Education & Child or Youth Development. The awards now operate in more than 20 regions, and this is the third year they are being run in Hutt City. "Last years winner was the Walter Nash Stadium Trust and they represented the city at the national awards earlier this year", says Caroline O'Loan, Community Funding Officer for the Council.

Once again TrustPower's annual regional Community Awards will culminate in National Community Awards, to which TrustPower invites, at its cost, the Mayors and two representatives of the overall winning organisations from all participating regions. The venue for the National Awards alternates yearly between the North and South Islands, and for 2003 regional award winners, will be held in Marlborough during March 2004.

A panel made up of representatives of the Hutt City Council, TrustPower, and the community undertakes judging of the awards. Judges typically look for the value of each organisation's contribution to the overall community during the previous year, and where that contribution involves a project or programme of an on-going nature, the effort involved and results achieved as at nomination date.

If you belong to or wish to nominate an organisation or individual please contact Caroline O'Loan at the Hutt City Council on phone 570 6527 or alternatively you can download a nomination form at www.huttcity.info/funding
