COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT WINS AWARD
Hutt City Council's Community Development Business Unit won an "Outstanding Service" award at the recent Local Government Community Development Conference in Hastings.
The honour, presented as part of the bi-annual National Local Authority Community Development Awards, was in recognition of Hutt City Council's "Good Practice Guidelines".
The Guidelines were produced primarily for the Hutt's community houses and centres to help them achieve best management and operational practice, but are also relevant for all community groups and organisations in the city.
The "Outstanding Service" award recognises projects or processes that have shown outstanding commitment and success in strengthening people and communities.
The Guidelines contain practical information on many aspects of running a community group including meetings, developing policy, event planning and evaluation, employment matters with examples of job descriptions, advice on managing finances and health and safety issues.
Community Development Officer Whiti Turner was primarily responsible for overseeing this project, which took more than 12 months to complete.
"I am absolutely rapt by this award," she said. "And especially proud that the 'Good Practice Guidelines' have been recognised as such a valuable resource for community groups."
The "Good Practice Guidelines" are available to borrow from any Hutt City Library, or by ringing Community Development on 570 6644. They can also be downloaded from the Council's website at www.huttcity.info/council/services/community
