Kensington Gardens is 2 yrs old Sunday Nov. 16th
MEDIA ADVISORY - Sunday November 16th, 2003
Wellington Bypass Community Garden Working Bee and Party:
Kensington Gardens is 2 yrs old this Sunday, November 16th!
Back in 2001, Transit started moving people out of their homes along the Wellington Bypass route. To protest this destruction of community, the locals got together and reclaimed a vacant lot on Kensington St/upper Victoria St and within a day turned it into a thriving, colourful community garden. It still stands today, as a strong message of resistance to roading projects destroying our community and environment.
To celebrate, the community garden creation group, 'Growing Community' are holding a community party/gathering from 5pm until late in the gardens preceeded by a working bee from 11am onwards (note the best time for media will be between 2pm and 8pm). Everyone is welcome.
For the working bee people are invited to bring seedlings/saplings of native plants (eg. flax, hebe, ngaio) and edible plants (eg. pumpkin, tomato, zucchini, orange, lemon). Tools, paint and paint brushes and compost bin material (eg. wood and nails) would also be really helpful. For the party people are invited to bring their friends and family, musical instruments, firewood, food, drink and games etc.
