CBC welcomes first signs of sanity

"Transfund's review of the inner-city 'Bypass' represents the first signs of sanity since the project was conceived" said Campaign for a Better City spokesperson Caro Henckels.

Transfund today told state highway manager Transit to look again at whether claimed benefits for the bypass could be sustained and whether better use of existing streets could deliver similar benefits with less impact.

"The 'think again' message that was sent to Transit creates an opportunity to find a "win-win" solution for Wellington. CBC has been saying this for ten years - I really hope Transit takes the opportunity this time."

"Transit has two choices - either they make up yet more fantastic claims about the bypass or they can work with the wider community to develop options that protect the Te Aro community and its heritage while delivering lasting benefits to the whole of Wellington".

"Over to you Transit New Zealand - conflict or cooperation? Its your choice. We hope Transit's new responsibilities under the Land Transport Management Act means it will take a more constructive approach than has been the case to date."

"In the meantime the community is more than willing to help Transit re-tenant and restore the heritage buildings in its charge. We will see if 'social and environmental responsibility' means anything on the ground."
