Saturday nights with Triangle - they're classic!

There's one new year's resolution that movie fans won't be tempted to break - it's to spend Saturday nights watching classic films on Triangle Television.

Triangle's run of old favourites includes films such as Alfred Hitchcock's Blackmail, The Desert Trail starring John Wayne, and other films featuring a formidable line-up of stars of the silver screen including Lillian Gish, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart.

The series of popular classic movies has been scheduled following highly positive viewer feedback to movies shown in the Saturday night timeslot during 2003.

The movies are scheduled to screen at 7.30p.m. on the following Saturdays:

Jan 10: Blackmail (Alfred Hitchcock, 1929) with Anny Ondra and John Longden When Alice White is attacked she uses a breadknife to kill her assailant. Her boyfriend, Scotland Yard detective Frank Webber, is assigned the case and attempts a coverup that leads to blackmail threats.

Jan 17: The Birth of a Nation (DW Griffith, 1915) with Lilian Gish Two close families must join opposing sides during the American Civil War. The consequences are shown in the context of historical events, such as the Civil War itself, Lincoln's assassination and the birth of the Ku Klux Klan.

Jan 24: Blood on the Sun (Frank Lloyd, 1945) with James Cagney Nick Condon, a newspaper reporter working in Tokyo, has to face the consequences when he refuses to side with the Japanese on the expansionist policies of the anti-democratic Imperialist government.

Jan 31: Easy Virtue (Alfred Hitchcock, 1928) with Isabel Jeans and Robin Irvine When Laurita Finton's lover kills himself she leaves her husband, assumes a new identity and starts a new life. She has to face her past when the mother of the rich young man she falls for finds out about her life.

Feb 7: Call it Murder/Midnight (Chester Erskine, 1934) with Humphrey Bogart The questioning of a jury foreman leads to the death sentence for Ethel Saxon - then his daughter claims she's killed her lover just as Saxon is to sit in the electric chair.

Feb 14: Dick Tracey Detective (William A Burke, 1945) with Morgan Conway Dick has to solve a series of brutal murders and he must find the common thread before more people are killed.

Feb 21: The Farmer's Wife (Alfred Hitchcock, 1928) with Jameson Thomas Farmer Sweetland, an old and lonely widower, wants to marry again. He likes three ladies who reject him due to his maid, Aramintha, who is secretly in love with him. He finally realises the right woman is living right by his side.

Feb 28: College (Buster Keaton, 1927) Ronald's high school valedictory address praises books and condemns sports but his girlfriend condemns his attitude. He fears losing her to a rival so goes to college and pays more attention to sports.

March 6: Battleship Potemkin (Sergei Eisenstein, 1925) with Alexandr Antonov Based on true events, the movie tells the story of a riot on the battleship Potemkin that started as a protest strike when the crew was given rotten meat for dinner.

March 13: Jamaica Inn (Alfred Hitchcock, 1939) with Charles Laughton An orphan sent to live with relatives who run the Jamaica Inn, fears for her life when she realises the inn is a base for pirates who lure ships to their doom on the rocky coast.

March 20: A Star is Born (William A Wellman, 1937) with Janet Gaynor When Esther Blodgett marries her movie star idol Norman Maine she gets caught up in the Hollywood glamour machine while his career dwindles to nothing.

March 27: The Desert Trail (Lewis D Collins, 1935) with John Wayne A rodeo winner and his friend wrongly jailed for murder are freed by the murderer's accomplice. The trio attempts to get a confession from the murderer.

Triangle Television is Auckland's only regional, non-commercial television station and has operated as a public broadcaster to Greater Auckland since August 1 1998. The channel screens a mix of regional-access television with international news and information programmes. It is non-profit making and operates with no funding from NZ on Air. Triangle broadcasts 24 hours daily from UHF channel 41.
