Council votes not to fill vacancy

The Greater Wellington Regional Council voted yesterday not to fill the extraordinary vacancy left by the resignation of Councillor Irvine Yardley on 19th February. The vote was 10 – 1 in favour of not filling the vacancy.

“There were a number of reasons why the Council decided not to fill the vacancy,” said Council Chairperson, Margaret Shields.

“Firstly, Councillor Yardley was one of five members representing the Wellington constituency. The four remaining members will continue to represent Wellington constituents until the next election, in mid-October. Given the short period of time before the elections, Councillors believed the remaining members would be able to satisfactorily represent the interests of Wellington residents.”

“Secondly, Councillors noted that the next elections were just over six months away, and that it was more appropriate to allow voters to choose a new representative then, rather than appoint someone now.”

The Council also voted to appoint Councillor Glen Evans as Deputy Chair of the Environment Committee, to replace Councillor Yardley.
