Tawhitokino track upgrade

Tawhitokino track upgrade

The Auckland Regional Council has upgraded the track access to Tawhitokino Regional Park, one of the region’s most remote parks.

Tawhitokino is a genuine escape, lying behind one of the Auckland region’s most attractive pohutukawa-fringed beaches. There is no road access to the park. It can be accessed by kayak or by foot at low tide.

It offers a great place for swimming, fishing, kayaking, camping (there is an ARC campground at the park) walking the dog or just lazing on the beach.

“We have upgraded the track access by replacing steps and improvimg the pathway which means that this secluded spot is just a little easier to access,” says ARC Parks and Heritage Committee Chair Bill Burrill.

To get to Tawhitokino, head south on the Southern Motorway (State Highway 1). Take the Papakura off-ramp and follow the signs to Clevedon. From Clevedon, follow the signs to Kawakawa Bay. Continue to the end of Kawakawa Bay Coast Road. From there, follow the Tawhitokino Track on foot around the rocks and over Papanui Point to the be The Maungatauhoro

Tawhitokino Regional Park is just one of the 21 regional parks managed by the Auckland Regional Council. For more information on regional parks visit www.arc.govt.nz or call 09 366 2000.
