Gaming Venue Policy A Slow Success
Gaming Venue Policy A Slow Success
The Porirua City Council last night finally decided to accept the recommendations that came from the Hearings Committee that considered public submissions on gaming venues.
The decision was made at a Special Meeting of Council.
The chairperson of the Hearings Committee, Cr Robert Shaw, said the Porirua Council was "being straight with the public although it has taken us a little time to get there".
Cr Shaw said he wanted to thank everyone who had made a submission and assure them that their views had been carefully considered in a long debate.
"The policy is appropriate for Porirua City and consistent with the weight of the public submissions.
Council has adopted a conservative policy which seeks to manage gambling.
After one year the economic and social impact of the policy will be reviewed.
Anyone concerned with the way the policy has worked will be able to make a submission at that time."
Cr Shaw said there will be protection of the suburbs which was the major concern of many submitters.
Companies who want
to establish new gambling facilities will have to look at
the town centre.
