Task Group to Look at GMO Implications

The Far North District Council has confirmed its intention to support a Northland-wide common approach to issues surrounding legislative controls over the release of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).

A GMO Task Group has been set up with a mandate to liase and co-operate with its neighbours including the Whangarei, Kaipara and Rodney District Councils and the Northland Regional Council.

The task group will include Chief Executive Clive Manley, senior planning staff and Councillors Sue Shepherd, Garry Weeds and Denis Bowman.

The liaison group is expected in particular to discuss a report and related legal opinion on “The Community Management of GMOs” which raised land management issues related to the role of territorial authorities in GMO matters.
