Plant a tree at Tapapakanga Regional Park this Sunday

Aucklanders are invited to pick up their spades and help plant native trees at Tapapakanga Regional Park this Sunday.

The planting day is on Sunday 18 July from 10am onwards.

New trees are planted to protect park life including, native plants, birds, fish and insects and their support systems and food supplies. Planting helps maintain and enhance biodiversity.

Planting also nurses damaged ecosystems back to health and speeds up natural regeneration. It can provide models * parks are a giant version of what your backyard could be like * that are green, lush and alive. Planting also helps to reduce flooding and erosion, and improve water quality in our rivers and beaches making them safer for swimming.

At Tapapakanga tree planting will help to enhance the kanuka forest along the Tapapakanga stream and wetland area; provide habitat for water loving plants, fish and birds; stabilise stream banks and improve water quality; and reduce cliff subsidence (north of the campground).

Where to meet Tapapakanga is located on the Firth of Thames coast. From Auckland CBD, take the southern motorway (State Highway 1) to the Papakura off-ramp. Head towards Clevedon, and carry on through Kawakawa Bay and Orere Point. Just past, Orere Point turn off the East Coast Road down Deery Road to the Park) Follow the signs from the park entrance to the meeting point.

What to bring Work boots or enclosed shoes (not sandals), a spade (if you have one), gloves, a jacket, snacks and water bottle (it's thirsty work). We provide a sausage sizzle for lunch.
