It’s in the can!

20 August 2004

It’s in the can!

Greater Wellington Regional Council hopes canned laughter will encourage people to recycle. From Thursday, 19 August Greater Wellington will be screening an ad in cinemas across the region as part of its Be the Difference campaign.

“Our Let Metal Live ad is a fun and memorable way of reminding people to recycle because new products can be made out of rubbish. Recycling is one of the easy things everyone can do to make a difference for the environment,” says Greater Wellington communications manager Andrew Cutler.

Sixty five percent of the average rubbish bag can be recycled or composted. New Zealanders throw away 3.6 million tonnes of rubbish every year.

“We can’t keep burying rubbish and hope the problem goes away. Rubbish doesn’t easily break down in a landfill and the Wellington region is running out of space for new landfills. The more recycling and composting we all do, the less we need landfills,” Mr Cutler says.

The Let Metal Live ad is being played at cinemas in Wellington City (Reading or Rialto), Lower Hutt (Hoyts), Masterton (Regent), Paraparaumu (Movieland Coastlands), and Porirua (Movieland). It can also be seen on the website www.bethedifference.gw.govt.nz

6371 households who are members of Greater Wellington’s Be the Difference programme will this week receive an information pack about getting your rubbish sorted. Greater Wellington’s Be the Difference programme encourages households to make small changes to their everyday lives that will make a difference to the environment.

The Be the Difference programme was launched in February 2004. Members receive information packs at least three times a year, giving advice and tips on how they can protect the environment and live a more sustainable lifestyle. Residents can join Be the Difference at www.bethedifference.gw.govt.nz or by completing a sign-up form available from Greater Wellington Regional Council.
