Mayor Decides Not To Participate In By-Pass Debate
Mayor Kerry Prendergast has withdrawn statements she made about the inner city bypass and refused their inclusion in a performance targeting community views on the impending changes.
The group who are staging ‘Paved Paradise’ say Ms Prendergast agreed to be interviewed about the bypass in June and was aware her comments would be included in a public performance.
Last week however, Ms Prendergast contacted the group saying she wanted to review the script before allowing the inclusion of her statements.
The group did not wish to show Ms Prendergast the script but had to offer her the option of removing her comments as part of a Victoria University policy.
They were disappointed when Ms Prendergast opted to take out her statements, just a week from opening night.
“We really feel that as the Mayor of Wellington she has a responsibility to share her views and to be held accountable for those views,” said Director, Felix Praval.
The group, who wanted to present the stories and histories of people involved in the bypass, have interviewed various members of the community including a historian and some Wellington activists.
The show which is described as a collection of arguments, attitudes and anecdotes runs for two nights only at 225 Aro St.
Performances will be held at 7pm on September 8 and 9 with entry by donation.
An open discussion will follow the performances.
