Go ahead for Waiohine Bridge replacement

Replacement of Wairarapa's Waiohine Bridge has the go ahead with a Transfund New Zealand decision to approve $4.12 million for its construction.

The 90-year-old bridge on State Highway 2 between Greytown and Carterton is nearing the end of its economic life. The narrow bridge is vulnerable to structural and seismic failure, and does not have provision for cyclists.

Transit New Zealand plans to replace the bridge with a five-span bridge of 10.6 metres in width, comprising two 3.5 m lanes and a 1.8m wide 'shoulder' each side.

Transfund chair Dr Jan Wright says the Board was pleased to fund replacement this narrow old bridge.

"The new bridge will be built to modern structural, hydraulic and performance standards," she says.

As part of this project, work will also be done to improve waterways to reduce flooding risk for the surrounding area. The cost of this work will be met by the Greater Wellington Regional Council, Carterton District Council and South Wairarapa District Council.
