Extreme makeover for Arataki Visitor Centre

Arataki Visitor Centre in Scenic Drive will close for six weeks from Monday 4 October for an internal extreme makeover.

A popular destination and gateway to Waitakere Ranges Regional Park, the visitor centre will undergo an internal refit which will include improved facilities and new displays.

Auckland Regional Council Parks and Heritage Chairman Bill Burrill says visitors can look forward to innovative and exciting displays designed by 3D Creative whose work has won popular acclaim at Te Papa in Wellington.

"Visitors will be inspired by stories and images of Waitakere Ranges Regional Park's history, sustainable future, natural beauty, memorable adventures and experiences," Cr Burrill says.

"Visitor Centre staff will continue to provide them with all the information and assistance they need to enjoy the park safely."

ARC project leader Tim Sherring says he doesn't want to give too much away but the new displays will be much more hi-tech and interactive than they are now.

While the visitor centre is closed for six weeks, people can call the ARC Customer Contact Centre on 09 366 2000 or visit the Council's website at www.arc.govt.nz for information on Waitakere Ranges Regional Park.

On weekends an information service for visitors will operate from the classroom near the main visitor centre.

Mr Sherring says visitors passing the centre during the closure are welcome to access building's viewing decks and enjoy the coast-to-coast views.

"It's also well worth taking the five-minute track from the carpark to the lookout above the visitor centre to check out the fantastic views and the new sculpture by local artist Pardo Jackson," he says.

The Visitor centre will reopen to the public on November 15 and there will be an official opening and festival on Sunday 5 December.
