Hunua tracks closed for goat control
The Auckland Regional Council will close several tracks in Hunua Ranges Regional Park from October 18 to December 13 for goat control.
The following tracks will be closed:
- Pukapuka Track from Lilburne Road to Mangatangi Hill Rd;
- Lilburne Road from Pukapuka Junction to Piggott's Campsite;
- Rata Ridge Track (southern loop) from Lilburne Rd to Mangatangi Ridge Track;
- Workman Track from Mangatangi Dam past the Workman Campsite to Whakatiwai Ridge Track junction;
- Whakatiwai Ridge Track from Workman Campsite to Waharau Ridge Track junction; and
- Access Road to and from the Mangatangi Dam.
ARC Southern Sector Principal Ranger Tony Oliver says the area around these tracks has been targeted because of its high conservation value, which is potentially under threat from increasing numbers of wild goats.
"Goats are among the most destructive animals found in forests. They are opportunist browsers that eat the understory of vegetation," Mr Oliver says.
He says the closure will not affect Hunua Ranges' most popular walking and mountain biking tracks, located in the west of the park, near the Cossey and Wairoa reservoirs and Hunua Falls. They will remain open and visitors are welcome.
Anyone wanting further information Hunua Ranges Regional Park should call the Auckland Regional Council on 09 366 2000.
