Art On The Buses Goes To The Vote
20 Auckland Artists have today had their most recent work displayed at Britomart Transport Centre. The canvases they have used are however not a traditional shape, but instead are in the shape of buses.
City Artists Network and Stagecoach Auckland have teamed up to produce what must be one of the first events in the AK05 festival, Art on the Buses.
Each of the 20 artists were given a maquette / model of a Stagecoach bus (the two sides, the back and the front) to paint. The maquette’s are on exhibition at the Britomart Centre from 10 December to 13 March. The public is invited to vote for which they think should be the winning bus design by voting at Britomart up to January 22.
The winning maquette design will then be unveiled, as a full size decorated bus, at Britomart on Friday 25 February, the start of the AK05 festival. The Bus will be a moving display of Stagecoach’s commitment to supporting the arts and to the esteem of Auckland artists.
At the end of AK05, Sunday 13 March at 2pm, the maquette’s will be auctioned at the old Chief Post Office at Britomart. 50% of the proceeds from the auction will go to Starship Children’s Health.
“Today we continue a journey which Stagecoach is very proud to be traveling,” says Bill Rae, Stagecoach New Zealand’s Managing Director. “Auckland deserves a world-class festival of culture, entertainment and art and we are proud to show our support for AK05 by sponsoring Art on the Buses”
This is the second Art on the Buses project sponsored by Stagecoach and the sponsorship is part of Stagecoach’s support for the Auckland Festival in 2003, and now in 2005.
