Residents request for review recognised

Auckland City’s Transport and Urban Linkages Committee endorsed a review of Auckland City’s residential parking policy and operations at its meeting on Friday.

“As Auckland continues to grow and develop, the demand for parking is going to increase,” says Councillor Richard Simpson, chairperson of the Transport and Urban Linkages Committee.

“There is already pressure on the limited parking resource across the city and this review aims to address the conflict between the needs of residents and on-street parking available to the wider community.

“We need to review the existing policy and practice to ensure that the city’s heritage and purpose-built apartments are catered for,” says Mr Simpson.

The review will take into account the views of current users of the council’s residential parking schemes and include:
- assessing how the resident parking scheme is applied across the city
- evaluating eligibility criteria for the parking schemes, including multi-unit dwellings
- benchmarking Auckland City’s residential parking scheme against other schemes available internationally
- confirming the legal position for on-street parking allocation.

Findings of the review will be reported back to the committee in March 2005.

Notes to the editors:
- Currently there are 37 streets with resident exempt from time restriction and 26 streets with the resident only schemes.
- The resident exempt parking scheme allows residents with permits to be excused from parking restrictions on that street.
- The resident only parking scheme allocates on-street parking spaces for permit holders during times detailed on the road signs.
